MONTPELIER — Two Vermont benefit concerts for Syrian refugees held on May 21 and 22 raised $12,500 in donations.
Organized by pianist Michael Arnowitt and the Vermont Fund for Syrian Refugees, the concerts in Burlington and Montpelier attracted a total of 800 attendees.
The concert featured thirty performers presenting Syrian music, poetry, short stories, and drama, with special Syrian-born guests from Chicago, Albany, New Haven, and Vermont.
Proceeds will be donated to the Karam Foundation’s humanitarian aid work in Anjara, Turkey, one mile from the Syrian border, and to the Syrian refugees being resettled in Rutland, Vermont this fall.
It will also go to the Vermont Refugee Resettlement Program which will provide these refugees English language classes and help them find housing and employment.
